About the Don't Get a
Dog Campaign
Southern Hope Humane Society managed the Atlanta area animal control for five years (2003- 2008). Due to Southern Hope's numerous proactive programs such as our Fix 'Em Free spay/neuter program which issued over 5500 free certificates and our Northern transport program, the kill rate at the animal control shelter was reduced by two-thirds during Southern Hope's management.
Southern Hope initiated the "Don't Get A Dog" campaign based on the problems we saw while managing animal control. In 2006 alone, we charged over 300 people in the metro Atlanta area with cruelty to animals due to neglect. The majority of these neglect cases were for starving their animals, not providing veterinary care for seriously sick or injured animals or for allowing their dog's collar to become embedded into their necks. We also dealt with over 400 animal bites a year, many of which were caused because pet owners did not properly train and care for their dogs.
All of the photos in the "Don't Get A Dog" campaign and on our website were of dogs that were at the shelter during our management. We encourage everyone to print out copies of the posters and to spread the word to NOT get a pet unless you have the resources, commitment and time to be a responsible pet owner.
